India delivered a thunderous batting performance to defeat Zimbabwe by 72 runs in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight clash at Chepauk on Thursday (26).
Chasing redemption after their loss to South Africa, India posted a mammoth 256/4, the highest total of the tournament so far and the second-highest in T20 World Cup history. Half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma (55 off 30) and Hardik Pandya (50* off 23) anchored the innings, while Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 44 helped India reach the colossal target with 17 sixes and 17 fours.
Zimbabwe’s chase was led by a valiant 97 not out from Brian Bennett, but the rest of the lineup faltered as India restricted them to 184/6. Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler with figures of 3/24, ensuring the defending champions secured a dominant win.
The result ends Zimbabwe’s historic Super Eight run, which included wins over Australia and Sri Lanka, while India now prepares for a must-win clash against West Indies on Sunday, effectively turning it into a knockout for progression to the semi-finals.
India’s early aggression, disciplined partnerships, and relentless boundary-hitting underscored their title credentials, sending a clear message to the Super Eight stage: they are back in formidable form.
