England opened their Super Eight campaign of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with authority, defeating Sri Lanka by 51 runs in a low-scoring contest at Kandy on Sunday (22).
The visitors continued their dominance in Sri Lankan conditions, extending the confidence gained from their recent 3-0 T20I series sweep and delivering the kind of composed performance needed to revive their stop-start World Cup run.
After opting to field, Sri Lanka’s spinners kept England in check at 146/9, but the chase unravelled quickly as the hosts crashed to 34/5 inside the powerplay and were eventually bundled out for 95 in 16.4 overs on a sluggish surface.
Will Jacks proved the difference-maker with a sharp all-round display, striking a handy 21 runs before returning figures of 3/22, while Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson chipped in with key breakthroughs to dismantle the batting line-up.
For Sri Lanka, only Dasun Shanaka offered resistance with 30, as England’s disciplined bowling attack wrapped up a statement victory that could define their march towards the semi-finals.
