Urvil Patel and Jamie Overton power CSK to fifth spot in record chase

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) produced a statement win at Chepauk as they chased down a 200-plus target for the first time since 2018, beating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to climb to fifth place in the IPL table.

The night belonged to Urvil Patel, who delivered a breathtaking 13-ball fifty, the joint-fastest in IPL history, and completely flipped the match momentum. When he arrived, CSK’s win probability was just over 38 percent; by the time he departed for 65 off 23 balls, it had surged beyond 90 percent.

Patel’s blitz featured a barrage of sixes, including a phase where he threatened to break the record outright, before he eventually fell with CSK well ahead in the chase. His knock ensured the hosts needed just a controlled finish rather than a miracle.

Earlier, LSG had posted a challenging total thanks to a fiery powerplay from Josh Inglis and a late push past 200. However, CSK’s bowlers, led by Jamie Overton and spinner Noor Ahmad, pulled things back brilliantly in the middle overs, reducing the visitors to a below-par finish relative to their start.

In reply, CSK wobbled after Patel’s dismissal, but Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube held their nerve in a tense final phase. Dube’s back-to-back sixes in the closing overs sealed the chase and extended CSK’s winning streak to three matches, reinforcing their late-season surge.
