Jayasuriya to review future as Sri Lanka Coach after T20WC setback

Sri Lanka coach Sanath Jayasuriya is set to discuss his future with team officials after the island nation’s T20 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment.

Sri Lanka missed out on the knockout stages following a three-run loss to Pakistan in Pallekele, marking their third straight defeat in the Super Eights. Jayasuriya, speaking to the media post-match, confirmed his intention to meet with the hierarchy to review his role ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

“I thought it was time to give it to someone else,” Jayasuriya said, revealing he had decided two months ago during the England series that he would not remain in the role for long. He expressed regret at not being able to finish on a high note in the World Cup.

The former skipper took charge shortly after the 2024 T20 World Cup and, despite his contract running until June, has indicated a preference to step aside early. He highlighted injuries to key players Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana as a major factor in Sri Lanka’s inconsistent Super Eight performance.

Reflecting on his tenure, Jayasuriya noted progress made in all formats, citing ODI improvement from eighth or ninth to fourth, and similar gains in Tests and T20s. “I didn’t do it alone. My support staff gave me incredible assistance,” he added, emphasizing the foundation he helped build despite the tournament setback.
