Key stars absent as New Zealand unveil fresh-look squad for Zimbabwe series

New Zealand will field a reshaped squad for their upcoming white-ball series against Zimbabwe women’s national cricket team after several senior players were ruled out through injury.

Veteran opener Suzie Bates (quadricep) and spinner Eden Carson (elbow) miss the six-match assignment, while former captain Sophie Devine also sits out, leaving notable gaps in both experience and balance.

The absences have opened the door for first-time call-ups Nensi Patel and Kayley Knight, with coach Ben Sawyer backing the duo to step up after strong domestic performances, particularly highlighting Patel’s all-round spin value and Knight’s promise as a frontline seamer.

Star all-rounder Amelia Kerr will captain the White Ferns through the three T20Is and three ODIs, beginning in Hamilton on February 25, as the side balances immediate results with long-term planning.

With one eye firmly on the upcoming global tournament, New Zealand are using the Zimbabwe series to test depth and build combinations, signalling a transition phase where youth and opportunity could define the White Ferns’ next chapter.

New Zealand squad: Flora Devonshire, Izzy Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Polly Inglis (T20Is only), Jess Kerr, Melie Kerr, Kayley Knight (T20Is only), Emma McLeod (ODIs only), Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Molly Penfold (ODIs only) Georgia Plimmer, Izzy Sharp
