A manic Monday (16) at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup delivered qualification joy for Sri Lanka and England, while Afghanistan scraped through a nervy chase to remain in the hunt for the final Super 8 spot.
Three matches across Sri Lanka and India showcased contrasting styles, a clinical chase, a batting shootout, and a tense finish, as the knockout picture began to take shape.
Sri Lanka outclass Australia in Kandy masterclass
At the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (PICS), Sri Lanka produced one of their most complete performances of the tournament to chase down 182 and eliminate Australia from immediate contention.
After opting to field, Sri Lanka’s spinners choked Australia’s middle overs, restricting them to 181 despite a blazing 56 from Travis Head and a rapid start alongside Mitchell Marsh (54).
Leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha led the squeeze with three wickets, while Dunith Wellalage and Kamindu Mendis ensured Australia stumbled from 105/1 into a late collapse.
The chase belonged entirely to Pathum Nissanka, who smashed a majestic unbeaten 100, the first century of this tournament, sharing a fluent stand with Kusal Mendis before finishing the job with authority to send the home crowd into celebration.
England overpower Italy in Kolkata run-fest
At the iconic Eden Gardens, England survived a spirited fightback from Italy to seal a 24-run win and confirm their Super 8 ticket.
England piled up 202 thanks to a late assault from Will Jacks, whose unbeaten 53 came off just 22 balls, alongside a punchy cameo from Sam Curran as the former champions hammered 88 runs in the final six overs.
Italy responded bravely through Benjamin Manenti’s explosive 60 and Grant Stewart’s late blows, but England’s bowling depth proved decisive, with Jofra Archer striking early and Curran returning with three key wickets to close out the contest.
The victory pushed England into second place in the group and restored momentum after a shaky start to their campaign.
Afghanistan edge UAE in tense Delhi finish
Earlier at New Delhi, Afghanistan kept their qualification dreams alive with a gritty five-wicket win over the UAE.
After restricting the UAE to 160/9, powered by a superb 4/15 from Azmatullah Omarzai, Afghanistan’s chase wobbled before Ibrahim Zadran steadied the innings with a composed half-century.
Omarzai then completed a match-winning all-round show, blasting an unbeaten 40 to guide the side home with four balls to spare and lift Afghanistan to third in the group standings.
Super 8 picture takes shape
With South Africa already through, Sri Lanka and England now join the next phase with confidence and form peaking at the right time.
Afghanistan, meanwhile, remain in a three-way battle for the final qualification spot, ensuring the group stage drama is far from over.
If Monday’s triple-header proved anything, it’s that momentum, not reputation, will decide who survives the road to the title.
