Sri Lanka suffer injury blow as Malinga ruled out ahead of T20 World Cup

  • Madushan named replacement as co-hosts reshuffle pace attack before opener in Colombo

Sri Lanka have been dealt a late setback on the eve of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with frontline quick Eshan Malinga ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

The 25-year-old sustained the blow during the recently concluded T20I series against England, forcing selectors to make a precautionary change just days before the tournament begins.

In his place, Sri Lanka have drafted in Pramod Madushan, who brings experience with 12 wickets from eight T20Is, although his last international appearance came in 2023.

Led by Dasun Shanaka, the co-hosts still boast a strong squad and will aim to recreate their 2014 title-winning heroics, beginning their Group B campaign against Ireland on February 8 at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (RPICS) in Colombo.

Sri Lanka’s updated squad: Dasun Shanaka (C), Pathum Nissanka, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Kusal Janith Perera, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Pavan Rathnayake, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Matheesha Pathirana, Pramod Madushan
