SSC stadium shines bright ahead of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

The International Cricket Stadium at SSC received a major facelift on January 28, as Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, Sunil Kumara Gamage, inaugurated a new LED lighting system ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The ceremony was attended by Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva, SSC Sports Club President Ranjith Pandithage, and members of the Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Committee, alongside officials from the SSC Sports Club.

The T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will feature five matches at the SSC Stadium, including the highly anticipated inaugural clash between Pakistan and Netherlands. To mark the occasion, a spectacular exhibition match was held following the inauguration, showcasing the stadium’s upgraded facilities.

SSC Stadium now becomes Sri Lanka’s fifth international venue to feature floodlights, joining the R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo), Pallekele Stadium, Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium (Suriyawewa), and Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. The newly installed system incorporates six towers with 630 LED luminaires (three towers at 100 lumens and three at 110 lumens) to ensure uniform illumination across the field.

Equipped with advanced lighting controls, the system allows for multiple modes, including dynamic color scenes, enhancing the visual experience for players, officials, and spectators alike. With brightness levels that meet International Cricket Council (ICC) standards, the SSC Stadium is now fully prepared to host world-class T20 cricket under lights.

The upgrade represents a significant step in Sri Lanka’s preparations for the T20 World Cup, ensuring both players and fans enjoy a superior, modern cricketing experience at one of the country’s most iconic venues.
