Ageless David Warner commits to Sydney Thunder, set to play beyond 40

David Warner will continue his Big Bash League (BBL) journey beyond the age of 40 after signing a one-year contract extension with Sydney Thunder, committing himself to the club for BBL 16. The announcement underlines Warner’s enduring impact on the tournament following his retirement from international cricket.

The Thunder skipper was in sensational form throughout BBL 15, finishing as the competition’s leading run-scorer with 433 runs at a remarkable average of 86.60. Warner also rolled back the years with two centuries this season, an unbeaten 130 against Hobart Hurricanes and a 110* against Sydney Sixers, more than 14 years after registering his maiden BBL hundred.

Warner, who turns 40 in October, has now surpassed 400 runs in consecutive BBL seasons, amassing 838 runs at an average close to 60 over the past two tournaments. No other player has come within 200 runs of that tally during the same period, highlighting his dominance and consistency at the top of the order.

Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland described the decision to extend Warner’s contract as straightforward, praising both his on-field output and leadership. Copeland noted that Warner remains one of the world’s finest T20 batters, with elite fitness levels and an undiminished hunger to lift the Thunder after a disappointing campaign.

Despite Warner’s heroics, Thunder endured a tough BBL 15 season, finishing bottom of the table with just two wins. Warner outscored the team’s next-best batter by a considerable margin, while only Daniel Sams reached double figures for wickets. Still, the captain remains optimistic, crediting the unwavering support of the Thunder faithful as a key factor behind his decision to stay.

“I feel I’ve got plenty more to give to this team and to this game,” Warner said. “We’re already reviewing the season and putting the right plans in place to ensure we come back much stronger in BBL 16.”

With the new deal securing Warner ahead of the upcoming player movement window, Sydney Thunder retain a proven leader and match-winner, one determined to defy age and drive a revival next summer.
