Ward’s blazing 90 crushes Warner’s heroic 130* as Hurricanes go top

David Warner produced one of the greatest knocks in BBL history, but even his unbeaten 130* wasn’t enough to stop the red-hot Hobart Hurricanes. Tim Ward’s explosive 90 and Mitchell Owen’s rapid 45 powered the Hurricanes to a stunning six-wicket win over Sydney Thunder, chasing down 205 with 13 balls to spare at Sydney Showground.

Warner was unstoppable. Nine sixes. Eleven fours. Pure vintage power. His 65-ball masterclass was the highest individual score of the season and the highest ever by a Thunder player, guiding them to 205 for 4 after Will Prestwidge struck twice in the opening over. Warner finished unbeaten, single-handedly reviving the innings and reminding the world why he remains one of T20 cricket’s great entertainers.

But the Hurricanes came out fearless. Ward and Owen launched a brutal 108-run opening stand off just 51 balls, dismantling the Thunder attack from the first over. Ward was cruising towards a century before falling for 90, while Daniel Sams’ three late strikes briefly opened the door for the hosts. That hope didn’t last long.

Nikhil Chaudhary calmly sealed the chase with a composed 29* off 14, taking the Hurricanes to 207 for 4 and, more importantly, to the top of the BBL table. The Thunder, despite Warner’s brilliance, remain bottom and searching for answers.

It was a night where Warner lit up the stage, but the Hurricanes stole the show.
