Khawaja ruled out of Brisbane test as back woes persist

Australia opener Usman Khawaja will miss the second Test at the Gabba after failing to recover from the back spasms that plagued him during the opening match in Perth. He will remain with the squad for rehabilitation but has not been replaced.

Khawaja’s absence opens the door for Travis Head to continue in the opening role after his explosive 123 off 83 balls in Perth. Coach Andrew McDonald has suggested the team could adopt a flexible batting order, giving Head the chance to solidify his position while Josh Inglis and Beau Webster remain the spare batting options.

Khawaja’s form had been under scrutiny, averaging 31.84 with one century in 45 innings since the end of the 2023 Ashes. The back injury initially struck on the opening day in Perth, forcing him to retire hurt and later contributing to England’s collapse by the time he returned at No. 4.

Scott Boland acknowledged the setback but expressed confidence in Australia’s depth and adaptability, pointing to last week’s performances where replacements stepped up in key moments. With Head’s continued success and whoever fills the XI performing well, questions remain about whether Khawaja can reclaim his spot.

The third Test in Adelaide begins on December 17, giving Khawaja two weeks to recover and potentially fight for his return. His future as a Test regular now hangs in the balance amid injury concerns and rising competition at the top of the order.
