John Campbell, new faces boost West Indies ODI squad for New Zealand series

  • Campbell recalled after six years; Layne and Springer earn maiden ODI call-ups
  • Injuries sideline Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, and Jediah Blades

West Indies have named a 15-member squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, with opener John Campbell earning a recall six years after his last appearance. Campbell replaces Brandon King, who struggled in the recent Bangladesh series, while fast bowler Johann Layne and seam-bowling allrounder Shamar Springer join the squad for the first time.

Matthew Forde returns to the side after recovering from a shoulder injury, completing a pace attack that also includes Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, and Justin Greaves. Spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, as well as injured quick Ramon Simmonds, miss out, alongside Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, and Jediah Blades.

Campbell’s recall comes off the back of strong red-ball form, including a century in the second Test against India in Delhi and 278 runs in seven Super50 Cup matches at a strike rate of 102.20. Layne, who debuted in Tests on the India tour, brings seam options despite limited List-A experience.

The squad retains ODI debutant Ackeem Auguste, along with Keacy Carty and Alick Athanaze, under the leadership of Shai Hope. The series begins in Christchurch on Sunday, with matches in Napier and Hamilton to follow.
