Dan Lawrence replaces Jos Buttler in England’s squad, while Jordan Cox could make his ODI return for the series decider at The Oval.
England have brought Dan Lawrence into their squad in place of Jos Buttler for the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka, with the three-match series level at 1-1.
The decider is scheduled to take place at The Oval on September 27, with England forced to make a change after Buttler suffered a hamstring issue during the second ODI.
Buttler Ruled Out After Hamstring Problem

Buttler played an important role in England’s chase of 322 in the second ODI. Coming to the crease at 157 for 3, he produced an aggressive innings to keep England within reach of the target.
However, while completing a second run in the 38th over, Buttler experienced discomfort in his left hamstring after reaching 66. He subsequently left the field before returning later in the innings.
Buttler managed only three further runs after his return as England’s chase eventually fell short by 16 runs.
He had earlier scored 31 in England’s victory in the opening ODI.
Cox in Line for Opportunity

With Buttler unavailable, Jordan Cox could take over the wicketkeeping duties for the series decider.
Cox has played just three ODIs for England but has recently impressed in Test cricket. The 25-year-old scored 202 runs at an average of 50.50 across England’s three-Test series against Pakistan, including a 65 in his most recent outing.
Speaking about the possibility of featuring in the final ODI, Cox said the opportunity would be exciting, while acknowledging Buttler’s standing in English white-ball cricket.
Lawrence Adds Another Option
Dan Lawrence has been added to the squad as Buttler’s replacement and could also come into contention as England consider their combinations ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Lawrence has represented England in 17 Tests but is yet to make his debut in limited-overs cricket. He scored 65 in his most recent Test appearance against Pakistan and also contributed two wickets with his off-spin.
England will now finalise their XI as they look to seal the series against Sri Lanka at The Oval.
