Another rain-affected quarter-final sends Bangladesh through on higher seeding, setting up a semi-final against Pakistan on October 1
Bangladesh have advanced to the Asian Games men’s cricket semi-finals after their quarter-final against Malaysia was abandoned without a ball being bowled in Nisshin on Tuesday (29).
Persistent rain meant the match was called off around two hours before the scheduled toss, with both teams informed that they did not need to report to the venue.
With no play possible, Bangladesh progressed on the basis of their higher seeding, moving into the last four alongside Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.
Another Washout in Nisshin
The Bangladesh-Malaysia abandonment completed a run of four consecutive rain-affected matches in the men’s Asian Games tournament.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Sri Lanka vs Nepal quarter-final was also abandoned without a toss because of the weather. Sri Lanka advanced on higher seeding and will now face India in the other semi-final.
The tournament has therefore reached the final four without several quarter-final matches producing any on-field action.
Bangladesh to Face Pakistan
Bangladesh will now meet Pakistan in the first semi-final on October 1, while India will take on Sri Lanka later the same day.
The weather forecast for Nisshin is more encouraging for the semi-finals, raising hopes that the teams will finally get an opportunity to settle the knockout matches on the field.
The medal matches are scheduled for October 3, with the bronze-medal match and final to follow.
Bangladesh’s Asian Games Record
Bangladesh have a strong history in Asian Games cricket. They won the gold medal in 2010, defeating Afghanistan in the final.
They also secured bronze medals in 2014 and 2023. At the previous edition in 2023, Bangladesh lost to India in the semi-final before beating Pakistan in the third-place playoff to claim bronze.
Bangladesh will now look to reach the final once again when they face Pakistan on October 1.
