Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) produced another batting masterclass to defeat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 33 runs in a high-scoring thriller and climb to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 standings.
After being asked to bat first, SRH unleashed their trademark attacking approach as Travis Head blasted 38 off 19 balls and Abhishek Sharma hammered 35 from just 13 deliveries to set the platform with a rapid Powerplay assault.
The innings was then taken apart by Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, who capitalised on multiple dropped chances from PBKS. Klaasen smashed 69 off 43 balls while Kishan struck 55 from 32 deliveries as SRH piled up a commanding 235 for four. Nitish Kumar Reddy added the finishing touches with a blistering unbeaten 29* off 13 balls.
Punjab’s fielding struggles proved costly throughout the innings as they dropped three catches and missed a stumping opportunity. Klaasen was reprieved on nine, while Kishan survived three chances before making the Kings pay with a destructive middle-order partnership worth 88 runs.
Chasing 236, PBKS lost early wickets with captain Pat Cummins and Nitish Kumar Reddy striking inside the opening overs. Cooper Connolly stood tall amid the collapse and produced a sensational unbeaten 107 off 59 balls, his maiden century in professional T20 cricket, featuring fearless strokeplay against both pace and spin.
Despite Connolly’s heroics, Punjab received little support from the other end, with the second-highest score in the innings being just 28. SRH’s disciplined bowling attack, kept the required rate climbing as PBKS eventually fell short by 33 runs.
The victory extended SRH’s unbeaten record while defending 220-plus totals in the IPL and lifted them to 14 points at the summit of the table, while PBKS suffered their third consecutive defeat.
