Maharaj to lead fresh-look Proteas on New Zealand tour

South Africa have unveiled a youthful, experimental squad for their upcoming T20I tour of New Zealand, with Keshav Maharaj set to captain the side in the five-match series scheduled from March 15–25.

Only three players from their ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad, Maharaj, George Linde and Jason Smith, will travel, as the Proteas management uses the window to test new talent.

Head coach Shukri Conrad backed Maharaj’s leadership credentials, highlighting his experience and calm presence, while describing the tour as a key opportunity for emerging players to step into the international arena.

Batters Connor Esterhuizen, Dian Forrester and Jordan Hermann, along with all-rounder Eathan Bosch and teenage pacer Nqobani Mokoena, headline the list of uncapped selections after strong domestic performances, including the SA20.

Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee returns to the T20I setup, while Tony de Zorzi makes his comeback following a hamstring injury, giving the Proteas a balanced mix of youth and experience as they gear up for a challenging Kiwi tour.
