Reigning European champions Portugal lifted their maiden FIFA U-17 World Cup trophy, edging Austria 1-0 in the final at Doha’s Khalifa International Stadium.
Anisio Cabral scored the decisive goal in the 32nd minute, finishing a slick Portuguese passing move to hand his side the victory in a tightly contested match. Both teams were appearing in a final at this level for the first time, with Austria coming close to equalising in the 85th minute when substitute Daniel Frauscher struck the post.
Cabral finished the tournament with seven goals, just behind Austria’s Johannes Moser, who had eight. Despite Austria creating slightly more chances (15-14) and testing the goalkeeper frequently (5-4), Portugal’s efficiency proved the difference.
Accordingly, Italy claimed third place, defeating Brazil 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw. Austria had ousted Italy 2-0 in the semifinals, while Portugal beat Brazil 6-5 on penalties in the other semifinal.
