Borussia Dortmund held their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4–2 and advance to the German Cup third round, after the sides were locked 1–1 after extra time.
Frankfurt took an early lead in the 7th minute when Ansgar Knauff finished off a brilliant assist from Mario Goetze, both former Dortmund players. The visitors struck back soon after halftime, with Julian Brandt tapping in at the far post to level in the 48th minute.
The hosts came close late on as Ritsu Doan hit the crossbar before Jonathan Burkardt’s extra-time goal was ruled offside. In the shootout, Gregor Kobel emerged as the hero, saving Fares Chaibi’s penalty after Doan fired over, while Dortmund calmly converted all four of their spot-kicks.
The win sends Dortmund into the next round full of confidence ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash with Manchester City next week.
