Matthews smashed the highest ODI score by a West Indies batter as Zimbabwe’s Modester Mupachikwa’s 86 went in vain in Harare.

Hayley Matthews produced a sensational 182 off 156 balls to power West Indies to a commanding 99-run victory over Zimbabwe in the opening women’s ODI in Harare.

Matthews’ remarkable innings lifted West Indies to 299, their second-highest total in women’s ODIs, before the visitors’ bowlers dismissed Zimbabwe for 200 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Matthews Dominates After Solid Opening Stand

Matthews laid the foundation alongside Realeanna Grimmond, with the pair adding 128 for the opening wicket.

Grimmond played a composed supporting role, striking seven fours and a six on her way to 53 from 70 deliveries. The half-century was her third in just nine ODIs before she was caught behind off Beloved Biza in the 24th over.

From that point, Matthews took complete control.

She scored 120 of West Indies’ next 171 runs, accelerating dramatically as the innings progressed.

Matthews reached her century from 108 balls before shifting through the gears, bringing up her next 50 runs in only 32 deliveries.

She continued attacking in the closing stages, scoring her final 32 runs at a strike rate of 200 before Tendai Makusha bowled her with the first delivery of the final over.

Her 182 became the sixth-highest individual score in women’s ODI history and the highest ever by a West Indies batter, surpassing Stafanie Taylor’s 171 against Sri Lanka in 2013.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers managed to prevent West Indies from reaching 300, with Francisca Chipare taking two wickets while Biza and Makusha claimed one each.

Mupachikwa Leads Zimbabwe Resistance

Zimbabwe began their chase positively, with Sharne Mayers attacking Aaliyah Alleyne early and collecting 6, 4 and 4, although a couple of the boundaries came through thick outside edges.

Mayers’ aggressive start ended when she was caught at deep square leg attempting to flick Jannillea Glasgow.

Her dismissal brought Mupachikwa to the fore.

The Zimbabwe opener fought a determined lone battle as wickets continued to fall around her. She found valuable support from Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, with the pair adding 49 for the fourth wicket.

However, Zimbabwe’s innings unravelled thereafter, as they lost their final eight wickets for just 100 runs.

Mupachikwa remained until the end of the resistance, eventually bowled by Alleyne for a fighting 86 from 106 balls.

West Indies Take Early Series Lead

Alleyne led the West Indies attack with three wickets, while Glasgow, Ashmini Munisar and Afy Fletcher claimed two apiece.

Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out for 200, leaving West Indies with a 99-run victory and a 1-0 advantage in the series.

With Matthews producing one of the most dominant individual ODI performances in women’s cricket, West Indies will now look to carry their momentum into the second match.
