MI Cape Town have been forced into an early squad change with Tabraiz Shamsi withdrawing from the upcoming SA20 season due to personal reasons. The defending champions have named allrounder Thomas Kaber, another left-arm wristspinner as his replacement.
Shamsi, bought for R500,000 in the September 2025 auction, was set for his maiden season with the franchise after previous stints with Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals. The wristspinner is currently featuring in the Abu Dhabi T10 and had earlier opted out of a CSA national contract, missing the ODI series against India.
Kaber returns to familiar territory, having represented MICT in the past two seasons, including last year’s title-winning campaign. Across seven SA20 bowling innings, he has claimed 10 wickets at an impressive average of 16.60 and economy of 8.05. His recent form for Warriors in the CSA T20 Challenge, seven wickets in six matches at 6.31 economy further strengthened his case.
MICT still boast a strong spin unit featuring Rashid Khan, George Linde, and Dane Piedt, complemented by a world-class pace attack led by Kagiso Rabada and Trent Boult. The champions open their season on December 26 against Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands, which will also host the final on January 25.
