Australia have suffered a major setback ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with pace spearhead Pat Cummins ruled out of the tournament due to a lingering back injury. The team confirmed two changes to their original 15-player squad, also omitting top-order batter Matthew Short.
Selectors have brought in left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis and batter Matthew Renshaw as replacements. Australia selector Tony Dodemaide emphasised that both players offer balance and versatility, particularly suited to the conditions expected in India and Sri Lanka.
“With Pat needing more time to recover, Ben is a ready replacement who offers left-arm pace, dynamic fielding, and late-order hitting,” Dodemaide said. “We believe his ability to swing the ball at good pace along with clever variations will be well suited to the conditions and the overall structure of the squad.”
Renshaw adds depth to Australia’s middle order, complementing the settled top order in spin-friendly conditions.
“Matt has impressed in all formats, including multiple roles for Australia, Queensland Bulls, and Brisbane Heat. As a left-hander, he provides a point of difference in the middle order and additional support with Tim David completing his return-to-play program,” Dodemaide added.
Australia will now aim to adjust quickly to Cummins’ absence as they prepare for the tournament starting February 7, with a squad built to handle spin-heavy pitches and high-intensity T20 action.
