Thailand, Bangladesh, Ireland and Netherlands made winning starts as the race for four World Cup spots intensified in Nepal.
The opening day of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Global Qualifier delivered a mix of dominant wins, disciplined bowling displays and standout individual performances, as four teams took early control in the race to qualify for the marquee event in England and Wales later this year.
With 10 teams competing for just four remaining World Cup berths, the importance of a strong start was clear, and Day 1 provided plenty of momentum shifters.
Thailand cruise past Nepal by eight wickets
Hosts Nepal showed early promise after being sent in to bat, with their openers racing to 52 inside six overs. Bindu Rawal anchored the innings with a patient 44 off 56 balls, but regular wickets slowed Nepal’s progress as they were bowled out for 122 in 20 overs.
Thailand’s bowling effort was led by Thipatcha Putthawong, whose impressive spell of 4 for 27 applied the brakes through the middle overs.
In reply, Thailand were clinical. Natthakan Chantham starred with a fluent 57* off 39 balls, while Aphisara Suwanchonrathi helped lay a solid opening foundation. Nannapat Koncharoenkai’s brisk 32 ensured Thailand chased the target down comfortably in under 17 overs to begin their campaign in style.
Sharmin Akhter shines as Bangladesh overcome USA
Bangladesh were tested early after USA chose to bowl and struck three times inside the first 10 overs, including the wicket of captain Nigar Sultana Joty, leaving the Tigers at 66 for 3.
The turning point came through Sharmin Akhter, whose composed yet aggressive 63 off 39 deliveries steadied the innings and powered Bangladesh to a competitive 158 for 5. Her knock earned her the Player of the Match award.
USA responded with intent, with Chetna Pagydyala (36) and Disha Dhingra (23) keeping them in the hunt, while Ritu Singh’s explosive 33 off 13 briefly reignited hopes. However, Bangladesh’s bowling depth proved decisive, led by Nahida Akter’s outstanding 4 for 24, sealing a 21-run victory.
Ireland’s all-round display overwhelms PNG
Ireland set the tone early after choosing to bat, with captain Gaby Lewis striking a brisk 42 off 25 balls. She was well supported by Orla Prendergast, whose composed 56 off 44 anchored the innings as Ireland posted 146 for 6.
PNG’s Hane Tau impressed with the ball, claiming 4 for 25, but the chase never gained real traction. Ireland’s bowlers shared the wickets evenly, maintaining pressure throughout to restrict PNG and complete a 41-run win built on collective discipline.
Netherlands defend modest total to defeat Zimbabwe
Put in to bat, the Netherlands suffered early setbacks, losing Heather Siegers and skipper Babette de Leede inside two overs. A stabilising 53-run partnership between Phebe Molkenboer and Sterre Kalis rebuilt the innings, but Zimbabwe struck back strongly.
Christabel Chatonzwa starred with a superb five-wicket haul, bowling the Dutch out for 122 in 19 overs.
Zimbabwe’s chase faltered almost immediately. Four early wickets reduced them to 25 for 4, and despite Nyasha Gwanzura’s fighting 27 off 16 balls, the innings never recovered. Zimbabwe finished on 100 for 8, handing the Netherlands a 22-run victory.
Day 1 Summary
Four teams, Thailand, Bangladesh, Ireland and the Netherlands, have taken early command in a fiercely contested qualifier, while the pressure now mounts on those who stumbled on the opening day.
With qualification spots at a premium, every match from here on carries knockout-level intensity.
