Sri Lanka’s Under-19 squad can take pride in their development at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, even as their semi-final hopes now rest in the hands of Afghanistan. The Asian side delivered a dominant performance against South Africa, chasing down 261/7 with four overs to spare, but their progression from Group 1 Super Six depends on Afghanistan holding their nerve against Ireland.
Opening batter Viran Chamuditha was the standout, smashing 110 off 94 balls, including 13 fours and a six, while Senuja Wekunagoda contributed 48 runs. Captain Vimath Dinsara added a handy 32 off 38, emphasising focus on the game itself rather than net run-rate calculations.
“We just wanted to win the game,” Dinsara said post-match. “We batted really well, Viran got a hundred and Senuja got runs. I think it went really well.”
The bowling unit impressed as well, led by finger-spinner Vigneshwaran Akash, who claimed 4/46, including the crucial wicket of opener Adnaan Lagadien. Akash’s performance helped halt South Africa after a strong 96-run opening partnership threatened to set a massive total.
“Akash got four wickets and crucial wickets. We bowled really well,” Dinsara added.
Sri Lanka adapted well to Zimbabwe’s Bulawayo pitch, which contrasted with the fast-bowler-friendly surfaces they had played on in Windhoek, Namibia. The captain highlighted the team’s all-round improvement throughout the tournament.
“Bowling, batting, fielding, all sides are good and I think it’s improved a lot throughout the tournament,” he said.
With the semi-final spot now dependent on Afghanistan’s result against Ireland, Sri Lanka can reflect on a campaign that showcased resilience, growth, and the emergence of key young talents, leaving them well-prepared for future international challenges.
