South Africa produced a dominant batting display to script history at the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2026, piling up a mammoth 397 for 5 against Tanzania, their highest total ever in U19 World Cup history and the highest team score of the current edition.
The total eclipsed South Africa’s previous tournament best of 359 for 6 against Namibia in 2012 and now stands as the eighth-highest score in U19 World Cup history overall. It also surpassed Sri Lanka’s earlier milestone effort against Japan, making it the benchmark innings of the 2026 competition so far.
South Africa’s record-breaking effort was built on twin centuries from captain Muhammad Bulbulia (108) and Jason Rowles (125*), who ruthlessly dismantled the Tanzanian bowling attack. The pair combined for a decisive 201-run third-wicket partnership, carrying the Proteas past the 300-run mark with ease.
Earlier, openers Jorich van Schalkwyk (47) and Mogamat Lagadien (32) provided a brisk start, setting the platform for the middle-order onslaught. Bulbulia brought authority and composure through the middle overs, while Rowles anchored the innings with maturity and control, accelerating at will during the final stages.
Even after Bulbulia’s dismissal shortly after reaching three figures, South Africa refused to ease off. Paul James’ explosive cameo of 46 off just 18 balls ensured the run-rate stayed sky-high, with the Proteas finishing just three runs shy of the 400 mark.
Coming into the match after an opening-game defeat to Afghanistan, the emphatic performance served as a powerful statement of intent. With confidence restored and momentum firmly on their side, South Africa will look to use this historic outing as the springboard for a deep run in the tournament.
