South Africa have unveiled a formidable 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, with captain Aiden Markram set to lead a side blending proven match-winners and new-age power hitters. The headline story is the return of Quinton de Kock to international duty, alongside star quick Kagiso Rabada, who has recovered from a rib injury in time for the showpiece event.
The Proteas’ pace department looks stacked, Rabada joins Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch and teenage sensation Kwena Maphaka in one of the most intimidating fast-bowling units in the tournament. Spin duties will be marshalled by Keshav Maharaj with George Linde providing support, while part-time options Aiden Markram and Donovan Ferreira add depth.
On the batting front, Markram, De Kock, David Miller, Tony de Zorzi and Dewald Brevis headline a powerful lineup, backed by Jason Smith and Ferreira, both capable of clearing the ropes in the death overs. The squad also includes several first-time World Cup selections, reflecting South Africa’s focus on developing a new generation of T20 stars.
Selector Patrick Moroney said the panel had made “big calls” but believes the group selected has the quality and balance to challenge for the title. Notable absentees include Heinrich Klaasen, now retired from international cricket, and Reeza Hendricks, while Tabraiz Shamsi has also been overlooked following contract changes.
South Africa are placed in Group D alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Canada and the UAE, with their campaign beginning on February 9 against Canada. The Proteas are still chasing their first Men’s T20 World Cup crown, having fallen agonisingly short in the 2024 final against India.
With Rabada firing again, De Kock back at the top, and young stars ready to shine, South Africa arrive at the 2026 edition with belief, balance, and serious firepower, determined to finally break their World Cup jinx.
