Luke Wright to step down as England Men’s Selector after T20 World Cup 2026

England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed that Luke Wright will resign from his role as England men’s selector following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, bringing an end to a three-year stint that began in November 2022. The decision will see Wright step aside after the marquee tournament in India and Sri Lanka, allowing England continuity through a major global cycle before a transition behind the scenes.

In an ECB statement, Wright described the role as both an honour and a demanding commitment, explaining that the extensive travel and time away from home played a key part in his decision. With a young family, Wright said the timing felt right to “pass the baton,” while expressing pride in the players identified and developed during his tenure. He also paid tribute to ECB colleagues and particularly Managing Director Rob Key for entrusting him with the responsibility.

Rob Key responded by praising Wright’s influence, noting that his contribution went far beyond selection alone. Key highlighted Wright’s judgement, trustworthiness and broader cricketing insight, admitting disappointment at his departure while backing him to return to English cricket in another capacity in the future.

Wright’s exit comes as England continue preparations for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with the side currently touring Sri Lanka for a limited-overs series. The two-time champions are drawn in Group C and will begin their World Cup campaign against Nepal on February 8, aiming to add another global title before Wright officially brings down the curtain on his selector role.
