India, Pakistan keep semi-final hopes alive ahead of blockbuster U19 clash

India and Pakistan remain firmly in the hunt for the semi-finals of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup after recording dominant wins in their respective Super Six encounters, setting up a high-stakes showdown on Sunday (1).

India surged to the top of the Group 2 standings following a crushing 204-run victory over Zimbabwe, while Pakistan stayed alive with a commanding eight-wicket win against New Zealand. With England, India and Pakistan now separated by fine margins, the upcoming India–Pakistan clash promises to be decisive in shaping the semi-final lineup.

Pakistan cruise past New Zealand

Pakistan delivered a statement performance against New Zealand, bundling the Black Caps out for just 110 before completing the chase inside 18 overs. The comprehensive win not only boosted Pakistan’s points tally but also strengthened their net run rate, now standing at a healthy +1.484, which could prove crucial in a tight qualification battle.

After opting to field first, Pakistan’s pace attack thrived in helpful conditions at the Harare Sports Club. Abdul Subhan was the standout, ripping through the New Zealand batting order with a superb spell of 4 for 11, while Ali Raza chipped in with 3 for 36. Opener Hugo Bogue offered brief resistance with a brisk 39, but New Zealand failed to build any meaningful partnerships.

In reply, Sameer Minhas continued his impressive tournament form, striking an unbeaten 76 to guide Pakistan home in emphatic fashion. It was Minhas’ second consecutive half-century and underlined Pakistan’s growing confidence heading into the business end of the competition.

India demolish Zimbabwe to reclaim top spot

India produced one of the most dominant performances of the tournament, hammering Zimbabwe by 204 runs after posting a mammoth 352 for 8. The victory propelled India back to the summit of Group 2 and showcased their depth with both bat and ball.

India’s innings was anchored by a sublime century from Vihaan Malhotra (109*), the first by an Indian batter in this edition of the tournament. After a brisk opening stand between Aaron George and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (52), Malhotra and Abhigyan Kundu took control with a commanding partnership. Kundu’s fluent 61 complemented Malhotra’s innings, while Khilan A. Patel’s explosive 30 off just 12 balls provided the finishing touch.

Zimbabwe’s reply never gained momentum. Early strikes left them reeling, and despite a fighting half-century from Leeroy Chiwaula, the chase collapsed against disciplined Indian bowling. Ayush Mhatre and Udhav Mohan claimed three wickets apiece as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 148.

All eyes on Sunday’s showdown

With Zimbabwe now eliminated, only India, England and Pakistan remain in contention for the two semi-final spots from Group 2. The stage is set for a mouth-watering India vs Pakistan clash on Sunday, a fixture that could ultimately decide who advances and who falls short at the final hurdle.

High stakes, fierce rivalry, and knockout implications, the Under-19 World Cup has its blockbuster moment.
