Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) produced one of the greatest turnarounds in SA20 history to clinch their third title in four years, stunning Pretoria Capitals by six wickets at Newlands after appearing all but beaten at 48 for 4. A breathtaking, unbeaten 114-run fifth-wicket partnership between Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs transformed the final, ripping the trophy away from a Capitals side that had one hand firmly on it deep into the chase.
Chasing 159, SEC were strangled by spin and pace alike as the required rate ballooned to nearly 14 an over by the 16th. What followed was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Breetzke anchored the recovery with a calm yet authoritative 68 not out, while Stubbs, battling form and pressure, rediscovered his best touch with a decisive 63* off 41 balls, smashing back-to-back sixes to seal victory with four deliveries remaining. It was SEC’s highest partnership in a final and one that will live long in franchise folklore.
Earlier, Dewald Brevis produced a lone masterpiece, smashing his maiden SA20 century, a blazing 101 that accounted for almost two-thirds of Pretoria’s total. Brevis dominated a crucial stand with Bryce Parsons after Capitals slipped to 1 for 2, but relentless bowling from Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje ensured the damage was capped. Jansen was outstanding on the big stage, finishing with 3 for 10, including a double-wicket maiden, as Pretoria limped to 158 for 7, scoring just three runs across the final two overs.
The final underlined everything Sunrisers Eastern Cape have come to represent in SA20, smart recruitment, calm leadership, and big-game temperament. Stubbs’ innings was particularly symbolic, marking his first T20 fifty in 51 innings and arriving just days after his T20 World Cup call-up. With Quinton de Kock topping the season’s run charts, Jansen continuing his rise as one of the league’s elite allrounders, and yet another title secured, SEC’s dynasty in SA20 now feels undeniable.
From 48 for 4 to champions once more, Sunrisers Eastern Cape didn’t just win a final, they authored another chapter of dominance, belief, and fearless cricket.
