Steve Smith has been ruled out of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide on the morning (17) of the match after experiencing vertigo-type symptoms, forcing a late change to Australia’s lineup.
Cricket Australia confirmed Smith felt unwell during the nets session and after being assessed, it was decided he would not play. The veteran batter, who has battled similar vestibular issues intermittently in the past, is expected to recover in time for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
Usman Khawaja has been recalled to the squad, slotting in at No. 4 while Travis Head and Jake Weatherald continue to open. The 38-year-old’s return comes just a day after it appeared unlikely he would play again, making him the first Australian Test player to feature at 39 in 40 years.
Pat Cummins, captaining in Adelaide, confirmed the decision, praising Khawaja’s experience and ability to step in at short notice. Smith had already missed two of Australia’s last six Tests due to injury or illness, but this marks the first time vertigo has sidelined him from a match.
Selectors have retained the rest of the batting order, maintaining continuity while Australia prepares for what promises to be a high-stakes clash at the iconic Adelaide Oval.
