Sri Lanka unveil young squad for India T20I tour

  • Five-match T20I series begins December 21 in Visakhapatnam

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has named a 15-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, with the team departed for India this morning (17). The series will be played on December 21, 23, 26, 28, and 30, with the final two matches in Thiruvananthapuram.

The squad features a mix of youth and experience as the team looks ahead to next year’s T20 World Cup in England. Highlights include 17-year-old ambidextrous spinner Shashini Gimhani, 23-year-old seamer Kawya Kavindi, and 19-year-old pacer Rashmika Sewwandi. Captain Chamari Athapaththu will lead the side, supported by veteran spinner Inoka Ranaweera (39).

Several experienced players have been omitted, including wicketkeeper-batter Anushka Sanjeewani (35), Udeshika Prabodhani (39), Sugandika Kumari (33), and Achini Kulasuriya (34), signalling a clear focus on introducing fresh talent.

The batting line-up remains familiar with players like Hasini Perera, Vishmi Giunaratne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Nilakshika de Silva, and Kavisha Dilhari, while Kaushini Nuthyangana is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties. The bowling attack combines youth and promise, with newcomers joining established performers Malki Madara and Malsha Shehani.

Sri Lanka will kick off the series in Visakhapatnam on December 21, aiming to give their young talents valuable exposure against a strong Indian side.
