Lizelle Lee powers Hobart Hurricanes to maiden WBBL title

Lizelle Lee produced a finals performance for the ages, smashing an unbeaten 77 off 44 balls to carry Hobart Hurricanes to their first-ever WBBL title with an emphatic eight-wicket win over Perth Scorchers.

After being sent in, Scorchers struggled to gain momentum despite Hurricanes spilling several chances in the field. Heather Graham (2–26) and Linsey Smith (2–8) applied the brakes effectively, keeping Perth to 137 for 5, with Beth Mooney and skipper Sophie Devine failing to capitalise on multiple reprieves.

Devine briefly threatened with two late sixes but was stumped in the 17th over, while Graham had earlier removed Mooney after three dropped chances. Smith’s tight two-over spell proved decisive, choking the Scorchers in the death overs on a surface that demanded smart batting.

Lee then took centre stage in the chase, tearing into the Scorchers attack from the outset and never easing off. She struck 10 fours and four sixes, recording the highest individual score in a WBBL final, and shared a match-defining 77-run stand with Nat Sciver-Brunt (35) to flatten any resistance.

Hurricanes sealed victory with 30 balls to spare, capping a dominant campaign after finishing top of the league stage. Just months after the men lifted the BBL trophy, Hobart’s women completed a historic double, finally breaking through on the WBBL’s biggest stage.
