Litchfield, Voll crush Stars as finals race tightens in rain-hit clash

Sydney Thunder dented Melbourne Stars’ finals hopes with a commanding nine-wicket win in a rain-shortened WBBL match at Junction Oval.

Persistent rain reduced the contest to 10 overs per side, and Stars could only crawl to 66 for 6 after being sent in. Thunder captain Phoebe Litchfield (37 off 23) and Georgia Voll (33* off 18) then made the DLS target of 76 look effortless, sealing victory with 17 balls to spare.

Litchfield fell with just 11 needed, but Voll finished the job in style as Laura Harris reverse-ramped the winning boundary. Voll also impressed with the ball, taking 2 for 13 to earn Player of the Match honours.

The defeat comes at a terrible time for Stars, who began the day second on the ladder but must now rely on other results to secure a finals spot. Perth Scorchers can leapfrog them with a win over Brisbane Heat, while Sydney Sixers could also overtake them on Sunday.

Thunder will end their campaign in seventh place, finishing with four wins from ten games.
