Keshav Maharaj has been named captain of Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming SA20 season, replacing Rilee Rossouw. Maharaj, who led Durban Super Giants last season, brings vast international experience and leadership across formats.
The Capitals praised Maharaj’s tactical acumen and composure, noting his extensive experience with South Africa’s white-ball setup as a key asset for guiding the revamped squad. “His leadership strengthens the balance and direction of the team heading into the new season,” the franchise said in a statement.
Pretoria Capitals have also overhauled their support staff, with Sourav Ganguly appointed as head coach and Shaun Pollock joining as assistant. The team splurged at the September auction, spending 32.5 million Rand (US$1.85 million) to fill 16 slots, including a record 16.5 million Rand (US$945,000) for batter Dewald Brevis. Maharaj was another marquee acquisition, alongside Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams, Craig Overton, Saqib Mahmood, and Codi Yusuf. Former IPL star Andre Russell joins as a wild card, while Will Jacks and Sherfane Rutherford were pre-auction signings.
The Capitals are aiming to bounce back after mixed results in recent seasons, having finished fifth in 2023-24 and 2024-25, missing the playoffs both times. The 2025-26 SA20 kicks off on December 26, with Capitals’ campaign starting the next day against Joburg Super Kings, while the final is scheduled for January 25, 2026.
