Ajaz Patel, Blundell return as New Zealand name squad for third test

Ajaz Patel is set for a long-awaited return to Test cricket after being named in New Zealand’s squad for the third Test against West Indies at Mount Maunganui, starting Thursday (18). The left-arm spinner could feature in his first Test in over a year and his first home Test in more than five years, with Bay Oval expected to offer assistance for spin.

Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell also makes his comeback after missing the Wellington Test due to a hamstring injury suffered in Christchurch. Fast bowler Blair Tickner, sidelined by a dislocated shoulder, and debutant Mitchell Hay drop out of the squad, with Hay returning to domestic cricket despite scoring 61 in New Zealand’s innings victory.

Ajaz last played a Test in Mumbai in November 2024, producing a memorable 11-wicket, Player-of-the-Match performance as New Zealand completed a historic 3–0 whitewash of India. Despite being a frontline spinner overseas, opportunities at home have been limited due to New Zealand’s preference for spin-bowling allrounders, making this recall a significant moment late in his career.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter highlighted Bay Oval’s tendency to aid spin as a key factor behind Ajaz’s selection, adding that his ability to turn the ball away from right-handers adds valuable variation to the attack. With New Zealand leading the series 1–0, the hosts will look to use the conditions to their advantage and press for a series win.
