Kane Williamson has been named in New Zealand’s squad for the opening Test against West Indies in Christchurch, marking his return to red-ball cricket after missing the Zimbabwe series earlier this year. The former captain re-enters the Test setup with head coach Rob Walter praising both his leadership and on-field influence.
Kyle Jamieson, however, has been held back as New Zealand continue their careful approach to managing his comeback from a back injury. Despite progressing well, he won’t feature in the first Test as the selectors increase his workloads gradually.
Blair Tickner has earned a recall for the first time since 2023, joining fellow seamers Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes, the latter fresh off a nine-wicket haul on debut against Zimbabwe. Walter expressed full confidence in the experienced duo, highlighting their strong white-ball form this summer.
Daryl Mitchell has recovered from injury and returns to the squad, while Glenn Phillips misses out as he builds back to full fitness following a groin issue. Injuries have also ruled out Matt Fisher, Will O’Rourke, and Ben Sears.
The West Indies series marks New Zealand’s first assignment in the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle, with Williamson’s return providing a timely boost ahead of another long red-ball campaign.
