Two-Day Ashes test leaves Cricket Australia facing major revenue hit

Cricket Australia is bracing for a multi-million-dollar setback after the Ashes opener in Perth wrapped up inside two days, wiping out ticket revenue for the weekend’s almost sold-out third day. Officials estimate losses exceeding AU$3 million despite a record crowd of 101,514 attending across the first two days.

The Test’s early finish came after Travis Head’s explosive innings and England’s high-risk Bazball approach combined to produce one of the shortest Ashes contests in modern history. Speaking after his knock, Head even sympathised with fans who had bought tickets for day three, which was on track to be a full house.

CA CEO Todd Greenberg admitted concerns before play on Saturday, acknowledging the financial ripple effect on broadcasters, sponsors, and the board itself. The timing is particularly difficult for CA, which recently reported an AU$11.3 million loss for the previous financial year, drawing criticism from Cricket Victoria.

Despite the short-term hit, CA remains confident about long-term growth. Chair Mike Baird has forecast a record year ahead, banking on booming attendance, viewership, and sponsorship numbers. Early signs are promising, with Foxtel recording their highest-ever viewership for day one of a first Test, and Seven Network also reporting strong ratings.
