Taijul, Mahmud clean up tail as Ireland fold for 286

Bangladesh wrapped up Ireland’s first innings for 286 early on the second morning in Sylhet, with Taijul Islam and Hasan Mahmud striking swiftly to end the visitors’ resistance.

Taijul trapped Matthew Humphreys lbw for a duck in just the second over of the day, before Mahmud bowled Barry McCarthy for 31 to finish the innings. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was Bangladesh’s best bowler with figures of 3 for 50, while Taijul, Murad and Mahmud claimed two wickets apiece.

Ireland’s total, though slightly above the average first-innings score at the venue, could have been much higher as several batters, including Paul Stirling (60) and debutant Murray Carmichael (59), failed to convert strong starts. Bangladesh’s fielding lapses, including multiple dropped catches, kept Ireland in the contest before the hosts’ bowlers tightened control in the later sessions.
