India’s former captain Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the tournament ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Rohit, who lifted the 2024 title as captain, ends his T20I career with 4231 runs at an average of 32.01 and a strike rate of 140.89. He is one of the rare players to feature in two championship-winning campaigns, the first in 2007 and the second in 2024.
His impact in both tournaments was monumental, from his unbeaten 50* against South Africa and 30* in the 2007 final, to his explosive 2024 run where he topped India’s charts with 257 runs at 156.70. His standout knocks included 92 off 41 versus Australia and a composed 57 against England in the semi-finals.
Rohit retired from T20Is after ending India’s 11-year ICC trophy drought and now steps into a new role off the field. Speaking on the announcement, he said it was special to have the event return to India and to be part of it again in a new capacity.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will run from 7 February to 8 March, bringing the world’s best to South Asia.
