MI shake up squad: Thakur, Rutherford sign; Arjun Tendulkar set for LSG move

Mumbai Indians have made major moves in the IPL 2026 trade window, bringing in India allrounder Shardul Thakur and West Indies power-hitter Sherfane Rutherford. The franchise secured Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants in an all-cash deal worth INR 2 crore, while Rutherford joined from Gujarat Titans for INR 2.6 crore.

For Thakur, this marks a rare third trade in his IPL career, having previously moved to Pune Supergiant in 2017 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023. After a mixed season with LSG—13 wickets in 10 matches, he now returns to the franchise where he once served as a support bowler and recently captained Mumbai in domestic cricket.

Rutherford’s move sees him join his fourth IPL team after previous stints with DC, RCB, and GT, where he scored 291 runs this season at a strike rate of 157.29. He also reunites briefly with MI, whom he represented in 2020 but never featured in the XI.

In a separate deal, MI and LSG have agreed to trade left-arm quick Arjun Tendulkar. Having played just five matches since debuting in 2023, MI have decided to release him to give the young seamer greater opportunities at LSG. Tendulkar, bought for INR 30 lakh last season, has three IPL wickets and has featured across formats for Goa in domestic cricket.
