Dane van Niekerk set for stunning International comeback after four years

Dane van Niekerk is officially back in South African colours, marking a sensational international return after more than four years away from the game. The former captain, who reversed her retirement in August, has been named in both the ODI and T20I squads for the home series against Ireland starting December 5.

Van Niekerk had stepped away in 2023 after missing out on the T20 World Cup squad due to fitness criteria, but her domestic resurgence with Western Province has reignited her journey. She currently sits among the top run-scorers in both the Pro50 and Pro20 competitions, forcing her way back into national contention and opening a clear pathway towards next year’s T20 World Cup.

Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi praised her renewed hunger, insisting that performance – not fitness tests – drives selection now. He emphasised that van Niekerk’s experience, cricket intelligence, and ability to win matches remain her greatest assets as South Africa rebuilds towards the 2029 ODI World Cup cycle.

The squads also feature several fresh faces and returning talents, with uncapped allrounder Leah Jones earning her first senior call-up. Big names like Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Chloe Tryon, and Nadine de Klerk will be rested for the ODIs but return for a full-strength T20I lineup.

With the men’s team touring India and no home Tests this summer, the Proteas women will take centre stage across iconic venues including Newlands and the Wanderers, launching a new era of depth, experimentation, and fresh energy.
